Department reassures concerned parents applying for Back to School allowance

The Department of Social Welfare has moved to reassure parents applying for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear allowance, who expressed concern that they could not download the form from the Government website.

Many began applying for the grant of between €150-250, payable by the Department of Social Protection, yesterday.

However, parents said that they could not download forms and that the text number provided by the Department would not accept the code advertised.

However, a spokesperson at the Department of Social Protection has reassured parents this morning.

"In 2012 the Department of Social Protection, will pay the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance automatically to a large number of qualified people," said the spokesperson.

"This means that many families do not have to apply for the payment.

"If a person received this payment last year and their circumstances have not changed, they should receive a letter by mid-June stating when and how their allowance will be paid.

"If they haven’t received a notification letter by mid-June and are eligible for the allowance, they should make an application. Application forms will be available by mid-June via SMS, in all social welfare offices and on the Department’s website, welfare.ie."

The spokesperson also stated that the text number was checked this morning with a successful outcome
