Fine Gael's Director of Elections and the Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney has confirmed that "under no circumstances" will there be a second vote on the EU Fiscal Treaty, if Irish voters reject it on May 31.
He made the clarification after the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton this evening said Ireland may have no option but to vote on the treaty for a second time, if the electorate reject it in two weeks' time.
During a debate on the EU Fiscal Treaty this evening, Mr Bruton was asked whether the Government had a "Plan B" if voters rejected the it.
He said a 'No' vote would leave Ireland in a crisis situation and a second referendum would be considered.
But around half an hour later, Minister Bruton retracted the remarks when one of his advisors handed him a note.
Fine Gael's Director of Elections Simon Coveney later said that there was no ambiguity on the matter.
He said the Treaty can be ratified anyway without Ireland and there would be no second vote
