Jury finds Wicklow man guilty of baby's manslaughter

A 34-year-old man has been convicted of killing his fiancee's three-and-a-half-month-old baby.

Philip Doyle of Tinakilly, Aughrim, Co. Wicklow has been found guilty by a jury of the manslaughter of Ross Murphy at 3 Creagh Demesne, Gorey, Co. Wexford on April 5, 2005.

Mr Doyle held his head in his hands when after three hours of deliberations the jury convicted him of killing his former fiancee's baby seven years ago.

The prosecution's case was that baby Ross Murphy died from brain trauma as a result of shaken baby syndrome.

Philip Doyle, who was originaly charged with murder, said the infant's injuries arose when he fell on the wooden, living room floor while holding the child.

However, the 34-year-old only told gardaí about this accident three weeks after the infant's death at Crumlin hospital, and the State – it seems – succesfully, argued that his story did not stack up with the medical evidence.

He will be sentenced for manslaughter
