Wicklow bridge renamed in honour of deceased garda

A garda who died while warning motorists about dangerous flooding last October has been honoured today.

A new bridge, which was opened at Ballysmuttan in Co Wicklow earlier has been renamed after Ciaran Jones.

The Kilbride native was 25 when he lost his life on October 24 last.

The official re-opening ceremony was performed by the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Sylvester Bourke, in the presence of Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and Wicklow County Manager, Eddie Sheehy and members of Garda Jones’ family.

"There was unanimous agreement amongst Council members to dedicate this bridge to the late Garda Jones who heroically lost his life trying to help others," Cllr Bourke said.

"We remember him today along with all the other persons who lost their lives at this bridge and in this location as we officially name this bridge 'The Ciaran Jones Bridge'.
